E56: How Much Can I Spend with $2M in Retirement as a CRNA

How Much Can I Spend with $2 Million in Retirement as a CRNA?

You’ve saved $2.1 million for retirement. How much can you actually spend? This is the question facing Sarah and Mike, a CRNA couple approaching retirement. Their initial attempt at planning showed that their portfolio would be depleted by age 75.

But with a few strategic adjustments, their plan not only worked it also allowed them to retire years earlier than they ever thought possible. This guide uses their real-world case study to show you how a strategic framework can make all the difference.

Retirement Planning 101: The Flawed First Attempt

Sarah and Mike’s initial plan was to retire at 65 and spend $15,000 per month. They also accounted for high healthcare costs before Medicare. When they ran the numbers, their portfolio would have a withdrawal rate of nearly 12% in the first year, a pace that would quickly decimate their savings. The answer to “Can we retire at 65?” was a hard no.

Strategic Change #1: A Realistic Look at Expenses

The first mistake Sarah and Mike made was assuming their expenses would remain the same for their entire retirement. We helped them separate their expenses into two categories:

  • Base Needs: A consistent $12,000 per month for ongoing living expenses.
  • Premium Travel: A separate $3,000 per month for the first 10 years only. This one change dropped their annual needs from $180,000 to $144,000 after year 10, making their plan more sustainable.

Strategic Change #2: Portfolio Optimization

At age 60, Sarah and Mike were in a conservative 60/40 stock-to-bond portfolio. The mistake? They had a 30-year retirement ahead of them. By analyzing their risk capacity, we moved them to a slightly more aggressive 70/30 allocation. This small change increased their assumed annual returns from 7% to 7.8%. Over 30 years, that extra 0.8% annually is massive.

Strategic Change #3: Tax Optimization

With nearly $1.7 million in pre-tax 403(b) accounts, every dollar Sarah and Mike withdrew in retirement would be taxed as ordinary income. But they had a precious resource: the “gap years” between their planned retirement at 65 and their Social Security eligibility at 67. During these low-income years, they could perform strategic Roth conversions to:

  1. Get more money into tax-free Roth accounts.
  2. Reduce future Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs).
  3. Lower their lifetime tax bill by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Power of Strategic Retirement Planning

With these three changes, Sarah and Mike’s retirement plan was completely transformed. Their new withdrawal rate became a sustainable 4.2% after year 10, and their portfolio projection went from running out of money to having over $4 million by age 90.

The power of proper planning even showed that they could retire at 60 and still be in excellent shape. The difference wasn’t earning more or saving more; it was optimizing what they already had.

What This Means for Your Retirement Savings

If you’re a CRNA with $2 million in retirement savings, here’s a framework for your sustainable spending levels:

  • Conservative: $120,000 to $140,000 annually.
  • Moderate: $150,000 to $170,000 annually.
  • Aggressive (with Roth optimization): $180,000+ annually. Your personal number depends on key variables like location, healthcare assumptions, legacy goals, and risk tolerance.

Your retirement should be as carefully planned as your most complex case in the OR. The key isn’t more accumulation; it’s optimization. Don’t let DIY planning and rules of thumb cost you the dream retirement you’ve worked so hard for. A financial advisor can help you set yourself up for retirement happiness without the financial worry.
